Teaching summary

In this teaching, Pastors Leonard and Lori Rola explain how believers can unknowingly fall into a “lie” by mixing grace with works. They emphasize that the true gospel is based entirely on faith in Jesus Christ, not human effort or law-keeping. The message warns that repeatedly hearing a works-based message can cause believers to accept it as truth. By rightly dividing Scripture, believers can identify the difference between the old covenant of law and the new covenant of grace. The call is to remain firmly rooted in grace and stop believing the lie.

Bible verses referenced

2 Timothy 4:1-5- "I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry."

Romans 1:16-17- "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The shall live by faith."

Acts 21:20-21- "And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all zealous of the law: And they are informed of thee, that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, saying that they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to walk after the customs."

James 2:9-13- "But if ye have respect to persons, ye sin, and are convicted of the law as transgressors. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. So speak ye, and so do, as they that the law of liberty shall judge. For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment."

James 2:24- "Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only."

Romans 4:1-6- "What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as about the flesh, hath found? For if works justified Abraham, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works."

Ephesians 2:8-9- "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."

Galatians 5:1-4- "Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace."

Galatians 2:21- "I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain."

Introduction: Ministry and the Depth of Grace

The message begins with a personal reflection on family and upbringing, highlighting how earthly parents can reflect God’s nature as providers, protectors, and caregivers. This sets the tone for understanding God’s grace as something relational and life-giving.

The pastors then explain the five-fold ministry—apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers—emphasizing that believers are not meant to be confined to one role. Jesus Himself operated in all these functions, serving as the ultimate example.

The focus shifts to grace. The deeper one goes into understanding grace, the more they desire it. Grace is not something shallow or temporary—it is something believers grow into continually. This teaching is positioned as both instructional and transformational, rooted in daily reflection and spiritual growth.

The Danger of Believing a Lie

The central theme is introduced: how repeated exposure to a lie can eventually lead to believing it.

The pastors pose a critical question: how long does it take for hearing something repeatedly to make it your truth? This is especially dangerous when the “lie” sounds biblical or spiritual. They explain that many believers unknowingly accept false teachings because they are presented alongside Scripture. Over time, these teachings can reshape beliefs, even leading people to reject the true gospel of grace as false.

Understanding Scripture: Exegesis vs. Misinterpretation

A key teaching point is the difference between correctly interpreting Scripture (exegesis) and forcing Scripture to support a preconceived belief (misinterpretation).

Misinterpretation happens when someone takes a verse and molds it to fit their message or agenda. Proper interpretation, however, seeks to understand the original context, audience, and meaning. The pastors stress that many teachings about works and obligation come from misapplied Scripture rather than the true message of the gospel.

The True Context of 2 Timothy 4

The passage is introduced: "I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

This passage is often used to warn against general false teaching, but the pastors explain that its specific context concerns the conflict between grace and law. Paul is warning Timothy that opposition will come—not just from outside the church, but from within—especially from those promoting a works-based gospel.

The Source of the Lie: Mixing Law and Grace

The teaching identifies the root of the “lie” as the mixture of faith in Christ with adherence to the law of Moses.

The following passage is used:
"And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all zealous of the law: And they are informed of thee, that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, saying that they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to walk after the customs."

This demonstrates that even early believers struggled with combining faith in Jesus with continued law-keeping. The pastors argue that this mixture is the foundation of the modern misunderstanding of the gospel.

James vs. Paul: Works vs. Faith

The tension between James and Paul is addressed through these verses:
"But if ye have respect to persons, ye sin, and are convicted of the law as transgressors. For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment." "Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only."

These verses are presented as the source of confusion, appearing to teach that both faith and works are required for justification.

Paul’s Clear Gospel of Grace

Paul’s response is presented through Romans:
"What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as about the flesh, hath found? For if works justified Abraham, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works."

Paul clearly distinguishes works from grace, emphasizing that righteousness is attained through belief alone.

This is reinforced with:
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."

The pastors highlight that grace excludes works entirely—any mixture undermines the gospel.

Falling from Grace: The Danger of Returning to Works

The warning becomes stronger with Galatians:
"Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Returning to law-based thinking is described as falling away from grace—being driven off course.

Additionally:
"I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain."
The pastors emphasize that adding works to grace nullifies the purpose of Christ’s sacrifice.

Living in Union with Christ

The message shifts to the positive reality of grace: union with Christ. Believers are described as one with Jesus, sharing in His righteousness and identity. This union produces transformation from within—not through external effort. Grace empowers believers to live beyond what the law could ever demand, bringing freedom from sin, guilt, and condemnation.

Final Exhortation: Stop Believing the Lie

The teaching concludes with a direct challenge: stop believing the lie. The pastors explain that feelings of guilt, shame, and condemnation are indicators that someone is believing false teachings rooted in works.

Instead, believers are encouraged to remain grounded in the truth of grace, continually hearing and embracing it.
The final emphasis is on freedom—true freedom that comes only through Jesus Christ and the gospel of grace.

We hope this article blessed you and helped bring clarity to the truth of God’s grace. This message is powerful and life-changing when fully understood and believed.
