Speaking Words of Life
Pastor Lenny begins by expressing his desire that every message spoken would be inspired by the Holy Spirit and become words of life for those listening. He recalls how the angel instructed the apostles after releasing them from prison.
Acts 5:20- "Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life."
The pastors explain that God's desire is for faith to arise, bringing healing, miracles, peace, joy, and abundant life.
Jesus Himself declared:
John 10:10- "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."
They pray that the life of God within believers would spring forth and manifest healing and victory.
Learning to Understand Scripture
Pastor Lenny shares that, for most of his life, he read the Bible and depended on ministers and teachers to explain it. Eventually, he learned that believers should not place their faith in men but in Jesus and in the Holy Spirit, who teaches and reveals truth. No person has a monopoly on revelation. Every believer can discover truth personally through God's Spirit.
Asking Simple Questions When Reading the Bible
The pastors explain that understanding Scripture becomes clearer when readers ask simple questions:
-Who is writing?
-What is his background?
-What culture did he live in?
-What did he learn?
-Who was his audience?
-What historical events surrounded his writing?
Understanding these things helps believers understand the intended message of Scripture. Pastor Lenny compares this to someone reading about an Italian Christmas Eve feast without ever experiencing lobster, calamari, scallops, or shrimp. Without experiencing or understanding the culture, much of the meaning would be lost. In the same way, understanding biblical writers helps reveal the depth of their message.
John's Account of Jesus Walking on the Sea
Pastor Lenny turns to John chapter six. The disciples had rowed several miles and found themselves in dangerous conditions. The sea had become violent and chaotic.
John records:
John 6:19-20- "So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they saw Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid. But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid."
The pastors explain that this account is much more than a miracle story. John intentionally records this event to reveal who Jesus truly is. Jesus was not merely helping frightened disciples. John was revealing that Jesus is Yahweh Himself, Lord over every chaotic force.
Jesus Revealed as Yahweh
The people of John's day understood that seas often represented chaos and evil powers. Throughout the Old Testament, God continually demonstrated His supremacy over those forces. John, being a Jewish man raised in the Scriptures, understood these truths. Therefore, when he records Jesus walking upon the sea, he is showing that Jesus possesses the authority and supremacy of Yahweh.
The message is clear:
-Jesus is God.
-Jesus is supreme.
-Jesus is Lord over all.
Jesus is Lord Over Every Storm
Pastor Lenny brings the application into everyday life.
Jesus is above:
-Every storm.
-Every sickness.
-Every challenge.
-Every turmoil.
-Every fear.
-Every difficult circumstance.
Believers are encouraged to let Jesus into their boat. This means trusting Him completely rather than striving, worrying, or attempting to solve everything through human effort. As believers yield to Him, His peace comes, and He brings them safely to the destination He has prepared.
Understanding John Chapter One
John begins his Gospel with a profound declaration:
John 1:1-2- "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God."
Later, John writes:
John 1:14- "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."
Pastor Lenny explains that John is not speaking about a mere expression or concept. John is declaring that the eternal Word who was God became flesh in the person of Jesus Christ. Pastor Lori reminds listeners that John understood how deeply Jesus loved mankind.
John 3:16- "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
John knew Jesus personally and wanted everyone to understand that Jesus is fully God.
The Word and Yahweh are One
Understanding John's Jewish background becomes important. John had learned from the Old Testament that whenever the Word of the Lord appeared, Yahweh Himself was present.
Jeremiah records:
Jeremiah 1:1-2- "The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin: To whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign."
Then Jeremiah writes:
Jeremiah 1:4-9- "Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child. But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD. Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth."
Pastor Lenny explains that John understood this relationship between Yahweh and His Word. Therefore, when John wrote that the Word was God and became flesh, he was making a powerful declaration that Jesus is Yahweh revealed to mankind.
Resting and Trusting Jesus
The pastors conclude by encouraging believers to stop striving, stop worrying, and stop carrying burdens that belong to God. Jesus is above every power and every principality.
He is supreme.
He is Lord over all.
Believers are encouraged to let Him into their boat, trust Him completely, and rest in His goodness.
