Teaching summary
In Part 3 of the Breaking Free series, Pastors Leonard and Lori Rola address the impact of personal experiences on how believers view God, themselves, and grace. Many Christians remain stuck in guilt, shame, and condemnation because of their past, traditional church teachings, or incorrect interpretations of Scripture. This teaching encourages believers to leave behind the "yuck" of works-based or experience-based beliefs and embrace the fullness of the finished work of Jesus Christ. Through faith, not works or feelings, we are made righteous, healed, and whole.

Introduction and Recap of Part 1
Pastors Leonard and Lori begin by thanking viewers and emphasizing their gratitude for the support they receive. They then introduce the third installment in the Breaking Free series and encourage viewers to watch the previous parts to understand the full teaching. They explain that this series addresses why many Christians remain spiritually stuck, beginning with the influence of tradition and denominationalism.
Traditions and Experience-Based Beliefs
They continue exploring how traditional church teachings, cultural norms, and past experiences have shaped how believers perceive God. Many are hesitant to embrace the truth of the gospel because it doesn't match how they were raised or what they’ve experienced in their church communities. Statements like, "That's not how I was taught" or "My friends don’t believe that" reveal how deeply people cling to religious identity over spiritual truth.
The pastors reiterate that if the gospel you’re hearing leaves you with guilt, shame, condemnation, or inferiority, it is not the true gospel of grace. They stress that the true gospel brings freedom, joy, and healing.
The Danger of Misinterpreting Scripture
They reference John 10:10 to reemphasize their earlier teaching:
"The thief cometh not, but to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."
They caution that incorrect assumptions—like believing the thief is always the devil—can leave believers vulnerable. The pastors clarify that much of the theft happens through incorrect teaching or religious tradition. They also address misinterpretations of verses about sickness and chastisement, such as Job’s words and Old Covenant conditions.
The Prodigal Son and the Father’s Love
They unpack Luke 15, focusing on the story of the prodigal son and the father’s reaction:
Luke 15:21-24
"And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.
But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:
And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:
For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry."
The father did not scold, punish, or shame the son. Instead, he celebrated him. The second son, despite obeying every command, missed the father's heart and lived without enjoying his inheritance. The message: obedience without love and understanding of grace can still leave one stuck in performance and lack.
Thirty Years of Misbelief
Pastor Leonard shares how he spent over 30 years believing he was just a sinner, that sickness was God’s way of chastising him, and that healing came only if God chose it. These false beliefs were reinforced by tradition and denominational teaching, not by the gospel of grace.
Pastor Lori shares that her approach to sickness was simply to accept it as a normal part of life, until later learning that even those views were shaped by misunderstanding. Together, they reveal how a lack of understanding God’s covenant leads to passive and powerless Christianity.
Condemnation and Healing Misunderstood
They emphasize how many Christians, due to false teaching, experience condemnation when sick or struggling. Instead of standing in faith, they feel unworthy or like they are “reaping what they sowed.” Pastors Leonard and Lori confess that they didn’t even pray healing over their children because of these flawed beliefs.
They explain that while such ideas are “in the Bible,” they are not always applicable under the New Covenant. They declare that Jesus has done everything necessary for healing and righteousness, and believing otherwise keeps people stuck in the yuck.
The Subconscious Battle and Renewal
They discuss how the subconscious mind stores long-standing beliefs, making it hard to break free even when a person intellectually accepts the truth. They encourage believers to renew both their conscious and subconscious minds by focusing on the truth of the gospel.
Referencing Romans 8:11, they remind listeners:
"But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you."
This renewing is necessary to break old cycles and embrace the full life Jesus offers.
It Is Finished – Not a Reward System
Pastor Leonard references the finished work of Christ and 2 Corinthians 5:21:
"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."
He reminds listeners that righteousness is a gift, not a reward. Grace is not a system where giving more earns more. Instead, giving flows from identity and love, not obligation. Jesus was made sin, sickness, and poor so that believers could be made righteous, healed, and whole. It is finished.
Final Encouragement to Step into Grace
The message concludes with a passionate call to leave behind false gospels, including the gospel of works and the gospel of mixture. These gospels only produce guilt, shame, condemnation, and inferiority. The pastors urge believers to focus on two key truths:
-
God loves you with the same love He loves Jesus.
-
You are righteous through faith in Christ.
With that identity, you can walk in your inheritance and stay out of the “yuck.” They emphasize that it’s time to break free from the bondage of experience and step fully into the freedom of God's grace.
We hope this article blessed you. Share this teaching with others who may be stuck in the cycle of works, guilt, or condemnation. The love of God and the righteousness found in Jesus Christ are more than enough to break every chain. Stay tuned for the next part in the Breaking Free series. God bless you!
